Server crashes!!! Help

  • Hi,

I have a problem with server crash. I am not able to restart my server, so all my databases are unavailable. I have the full, differential and transactional log backups but not upto the point of crash. I cannot backup the log with NO_Truncate option because the server has crashed.

My question is can I remove my hard disk replace it on my test server and copy the transaction log files(latest) to a different machine and do a restore. If then how can i do that.

    Any one please help

  • When you day it crashed what are you meaning. Was it an OS failure, hardware, other?

  • If you can recover the files you can attach them to SQL server on another box. I think your drive and directory must be the same. If you can insert the disk on another computer you could be able to do this it is worth trying

  • 'attaching' the files will onyl work if they (the databases) had been first 'detached'.

  • If you can get the disk with the database backups and tran log backups onto another machine then it should just be a case of

    a) installing SQL and SP's on that machine.

    b) Restoring databases - more than likely to new disk locations, allowing tran logs to be applied

    c) Restore tran logs

No different than restoring from tape backups.
