Far too many points to cover to provide a comprehensive answer. A few questions would be:
1. What version and edition of SQL Server 2005 will you be using?
2. Do you want a standalone or clustered server?
3. What budget do you have (assuming that the server has not already been presented to you)?
4. What features of SQL Server do you want/need to use?
There is wealth of information out there on the requirements for installing SQL Server 2005 and the operating systems it is supported on. The following links would be a good place to start...

You're starting from the wrong direction. First, specify your requirements (how many databases, type of database, how many users, which features do you need etc) This leads to a server with some specifications. The only thing which is left is your (preferred) supplier ...

Unfortunately (or fortunately ;-)) DBA's rarely control budgets, therefore there is no point in spec'ing a top-notch server only to have the purchase order quashed by the bean counters.
