Server Audit shut down server when 'continue' is set

  • Audit logs are being written to a drive that ran out of space. The audit is set for CONTINUE on failure, but the instance shut down anyhow.

Under "Audit File Maximum Limit", the 'maximum rollover files:' button is enabled, but there's nothing checked underneath it.

    2 questions:

    1) Why would the instance shut down anyway?

--"An error occurred while writing an audit trace. SQL Server is shutting down. Check and correct error conditions such as insufficient disk space, and then restart SQL Server. "

When the file parameters are adjusted, what table(s) get updated? I don't see a column in sys.server_audits, and sys.server_audit_specification_details

    and sys.server_audit_specifications

    are empty.

    SQL Server 2012, sp3 cu2

    thanks!

  • Does the drive the log files are being written to contain any system db files? Or user db files?

And is the drive truly full when this happens?
