Securing access to the Enterprise Manager GUI

  • My manager is concerned about the ease of access to servers within Enterprise Manager on client desktops. Is there a way to force a prompt for an NT password when opening a server instance within Enterprise Manager which has windows authentication - rather like that in sql authentication?

  • Right click the server and in properties you can select windows authentification or sql. When using sql you can check always promt for password.

  • Thanks Klaas. I had considered this but I already have existing NT accounts for those requiring to access the GUI and windows authentication. I don't really want to change to sql authentication but if I did then I would also have to set up sql accounts for those users too which seems like doing the job twice?

  • Hi, ok so you want windows authentification with a password. I don't think that is possible. Maybe one of the guru's has found a way?

  • Not sure if anyone else has found a way, but I don't ever recall seeing that.

Personally, for me anyways, it defeats the object of Windows Authentication of you must enter a password to perform certain tasks.

    Just my thought...

  • No way to do this natively. You could do some kind of funky thing that secures access to the MMC plugin, like maybe encrypting it with a password, but not sure this would work.

It sounds like you are trying to secure access from some functions in SQL Server. This is handled by setting the appropriate roles. Doing it with EM is not really a solution.

  • Do the users you speak of really need EM on their desktops? Generally speaking, it is a tool mostly for administrators wheras the client tools are geared to allow users access to query the dB with the permissions you have set for them.

  • Hmmm - thanks folks for your replies - I'm beginning to think it might be easier taking them off the clients!
