Good morning!
I'm looking into doing a SQL Server upgrade and have a question....
SQL Server Express lacks the Job agent. Is there anything I can't do by simply scripting it in powershell and scheduling it with the windows task scheduler? I'm trying to understand what I'm really losing by staying with express. The memory and space limitations are acceptable for me and if I can kick off any sql task using the windows scheduler.. I just fail to see where I'm losing out. I'm an entry level DBA though, so i could be very niave...
Any thoughts would be most appreciated!
We are replacing an application that was forcing us to remain on SQL Server 2000 Express (on 77 servers) and am now faced with the question of what we should upgrade to.... SQL Server 2008 R2 Express or Standard. The financial implications are understood.
thank you for your time!

You can probably schedule a lot with windows task manager, but using jobs you can define flexible schedules, you have integrated logging and notifications, you can implement restartability and so much more.
It's up to you to decide if you can live without all those 'nice to have' features.
Need an answer? No, you need a question
