I am not DB admin but have been tasked to look for some information. We currently use SQL2K Advanced Server to run the DB for our primary application. We are planning an upgrade and it has been put on the table that SBS might be a viable option for to reduce some costs by combining Exchange and SQL into one server. We have about 45 users. When I watch the load on the Exchange and SQL servers, it is plain to see that we are not taxing those servers so combining them from that standpoint might be viable. On the other hand, our application vendor says that the application and SQL should be run on separate servers and they currently are set up that way. We would continue to run the application on a separate 2K server.
My questions are, is the version of SQL on SBS the same as SQL2K? Will it operate the same way? How do I determine by specification that this will or won't work before trying a test setup? What other considerations should I bee looking for or concerned about?
Thanks

Currently, the version of SQL Server that comes with SBS 2003 Premium is 2000 so, yes, it is the same. It is used initially to manage the Sharepoint implementation that you get automatically but can't gain access to . The Premium technologies CD "opens up" the SQL Server so you can work with it as normal.
SBS is primarily aimed to small businesses, hence the name, so I would be a little nervous about running Exchange for 45+ users alongside a "busy" database/application, on the same server, without a pretty comprehensive resilient setup in place e.g. disk arrays, NAS, UPS etc. As SBS also insists on becoming the PDC for your primary domain this server will be under a reasonable amount of stress unless you get something quite beefy. Don't know how this might affect your existing domain setup.

Hi
One more thing to add/think about is that I'm fairly sure SBS limits you to a max of 50 users which it appears you're already very close to so you may be in a situation where to would need to revert back to your existing system if your headcount increases a little anyway.
Cheers
