what is the use of a SAVE point in a Transaction?
and Which is better to use an AUTO commit mode or an EXPLICIT/IMPLICIT mode for a SQL Server 2000 database?

I have seen very few situations where Savepoints are truly useful, but Books Online has a pretty good discussion on when they might be useful.
The answer to your second question is that if you ever need several statements to act as a single transaction, you MUST use explicit mode. But that doesn't tell you all you really need to know. See my articles on transactions for more information.

Actually, looking at those reminds me that I need to finish the series...
