Sanity check on an upgrade

  • Maybe a bad choice of words. We have an existing nt 4.0 server that is going to be torn down and rebuilt with win 2K. The OS and application installs are on a local 3 disk array w/no spare, this is going to be reconfigured as a mirror pair with a hot swap.

I have SQL Server 7.0 installed on this server with 70 databases on a SAN and a external disk array.

    My plan is as follows.

    Backup everyhthing.

    Rebuild the Server

Install SQL Server 7 plus the patches

Restore master from backup (can I just move the original)

    Verify all databases

Restore msdb (can I just move the original)

    Have a drink

  • are all the paths the same? I might be tempted to bring up the 7 install, get it patched, then down SQL, replace the master mdf and ldf, and come back. Should then "find" all the database files on the SAN if the drive letters are the same.

  • All paths are the same. Agree on patching up before replacing the master.

    Thanks Steve.
