Folks,
Our current production database system doesn't have any Filegroup except the PRIMARY default filegroup. So you can see the data and the nonclustered indexes are all put in PRIMARY filegroup.
Our storage is NAS, As a DBA i have suggested to the management that we go ahead with the SAN. I have also laid out a plan to create specific filegroups for the Production database stating the RAID Level to be used with the files. Our Network Infrastructure engineer has agreed to that as well.
Now as we understand the whole effort is going to cost us some money, my management has asked me to justify the performance benefits that we would get out of this exercise. While i told them that using SAN will give us reliability and faster data access with filegroup concept ,they want to know by how much are we going to benefit in terms of performance, they are interested in some kind of numbers.
How do i measure this even before i have implemented the filegroups? Or is there any ballpark estimates that i could give.
Any expert advice? comments are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If you do a forum search you will see a good bit of info.

We personally haven't used a NAS device for this sort of thing because we have a SAN. If you do go with a SAN make sure you know about RAID setups and how the spindles are setup to ensure that you cover your bases.
My quick opinion is that the SAN is better for SQL Server than NAS but that's just an opinion.
