Here's one good explanation.
I usually just tell the guys to make a local copy of all the parameters and use those in the query. It solved the problem everytime.

Believe it or not there was a DBCC running every 15 minutes in the backround. This ran before each Transaction log backup, it was not set to do so. Every so often we have to swap servers (Don't ask) so I presume the Task got corrupted by the DTS job used to transfer tasks
