Dumb question, but how are all of you monitoring the various forums, blogs, articles, etc posted on this site, and more importantly, on the web in general?
I know for SSC, I can subscribe to the various content, which I've done. Nice emails, Outlook interface.
I'd like to be watching the MSDN forums, various blogs, and the Oracle forums. I've downloaded a couple of RSS feed readers, most do not get updated when someone posts a reply to a forum. The various browsers all have their respective plugins, but I've found I get "Permission Denied" errors on some of the SSC topics. I'd also like to have it separate from my email interface.
So is RSS the way to go? The MSDN forums alerts do not seem to work for me, either.
Broad topic, would love to hear what y'all are doing.
Thanks!

I flip through the emails I get to keep up. That and the "Active Threads" to the left.
Not sure about the RSS. There might be some authentication here that's needed. I'll have to ask the question.

I use RSS for the blogs that I try to follow but not any of the forums. I rely on emails and then flip through the forums periodically.
I will have to try the active threads suggestion myself - haven't used that yet.

Some of the RSS work and others don't, seems to be very random. Also I've seen delays of a couple of hours before items show up in the feed.

I use RSS & email. RSS shows me each of the new topics as they come in. If I subscribe to a topic, either by posting or by simply subscribing, I receive emails for each new post to that topic. Seems to work reasonably well. Sometimes the mailbox gets a bit jammed from SSC, but that's OK.
As far as MSDN forums... same method. I have them on RSS feeds, which shows new topics, but not posts. For posts I receive an email to subscribed topics.

Grant,
Which forums to you find to be more informative and useful - SSC or MSDN?

Thanks for the feedback from everyone.
Grant, how do you receive forum alerts from MSDN? I've tried setting up alerts thru my Windows Live account, but they don't seem to work (I've never received an update). Is there some other way of doing it?

Yeah, mine didn't used to work, but now it does. I wish I could tell you what I did, but I didn't do anything.

You have to ask?
Joking aside, I like SSC for SQL. But there's more to life than SQL. DB Pro, just an example, really only has one source of good information for posting questions and getting good answers, and that's MSDN. Other technologies have similar issues.

I prefer SSC as well. The msdn layout seems too cluttered for me - and less polished. Thanks for the feedback.

Well that's good to hear. I think we're cluttered. I'd like a cleaner, more open Stack-style interface here.
Ahhh, dreaming of the day I'll get development resources...

Keep dreaming and maybe you'll get it. 😉
There's no reason to not try and improve the site from a development side, appearance side. It does good for the community.

I keep up by looking at the active postings in the daily newsletter. And keeping a post-it note of which page I'm up to in The Thread:-D
