I'm all we have at the moment, and I'm trying to learn everything I can about disaster-handling before the event. I'm working through Brent Ozar's hierarchy here:

Hi,
When it comes to "disaster-event" you need to think about those 3 topics: Backup, High-Availability, Disaster Recovery.
Now it seems you want to tackle the Backup topic. I guess you should start reading on different type of backups with SQL Servers:

Once you know what type of backup you have in place, then you can read about the restore process.
