Restore Process

  • This is my Database Backups Architecture.

    Backup Type              Backup Time

    Full                          11:00PM

    Differential                 12:00 Noon

    Log Backup 1              8:00 AM

    Log Backup 2              4:00 PM

I have a problem at 5:00PM and I need to restore to the closest point in time.

Assuming the Transaction Log is available, I perform a Log Backup called TAIL with the NO_TRUNCATE option so that the log doesn't truncate at 5:05PM. I need to restore to 4:50PM

Would the restore process below becorrect?

    1. Restore From Full Backup

    2. Restore Differential Backup

    3. Restore Log Backup 2 from 4:00PM

    4. Restore Tail Backup stopping at 4:50PM

    Kindest Regards,

  • Assuming that the log backup1 was taken the same day with the differential one, you are correct about the order (your case sounds much like a MS exam question)

First 3 point above, the restore should be done with no recovery.

  • This is a MS SQL Server 2005 Exam question but it relates to a similar setup I have here in a Production environment.

I just wanted to see that I wasn't going crazy with the steps that need to take place.

    Kindest Regards,
