Restore Master database next to other Master database

  • I have an old backup of a SQL 2000 master database where I have to retrieve some information from.

The old server is no longer available so I want to restore the old master database next to another and rename the old one.

Al works fine untill I get the following error: "There is already an object named sysnjobs in the database".

    How can I overcome this?

  • Not sure how to get around that on the restore. I do have a different thought. You could build a little Virtual Machine if you have the software and build a SQL 2000/Win 2000 box with just enough juice to install that master.. It shouldn't take more than 2 hours to setup, so if there is another way it might be better.

  • Since system databases cannot be moved I don't see this happening.

When going for solution suggested in previous post please be aware a system database can only be restored in a SQL Server of the same build as the one where the system database belonged e.g. a SS2K Master database cannot be restored on top of a SS2K5 server.
