Why do I get an dmo error 42000 insufficient free space when restoring a 6.6 GB backup than came from an NT server running sql 7 onto a win98 machine running desktop edition of sql 7? Error states only 2.2 GB free when my HD has 32GB free.

Is your Win98 running on FAT16 or FAT32?
Please check the limitations in the following page:

Using FAT32. Originally used HDcopy to go from a 3GB to 40GB. Not sure if this is pertinent. Backup is only 1.6, was it backed up incorrectly? Is there a way to just restore the mdf only?

Two things...
1. Whatever might be your database size, your database backup size will be proportionate to used space in your database.
2. Your can attach a single file (.mdf), in which case .ldf file will be newly created. But you cannot restore just .MDF file. When you restore from a backup, it'll restore both .MDF and .LDF files.

This is as I thought, just wanting to verify. Still unsure why EM reports only 2.2. GB free though.
