Resolve to Plan Your Year

  • Comments posted to this topic are about the item Resolve to Plan Your Year

  • Lots of people will resolve to lose weight, or exercise more, or stop smoking, or spend more time with their family, or work smarter/harder so they can get a promotion/raise/job, or whatever.

What I always wonder, is why more people don't resolve to enjoy life more by whatever means are available to them. Don't resolve, "I'm going to spend more time with my family", resolve, "I'm going to enjoy more time with my family". Put the right emphasis on it. How good is "more time", if it's spent ignoring each other at the dinner table, or, worse yet, arguing? How good is "more enjoyable time", if it's spending a vacation at Disney World for one week, instead of two weeks of watching TV in the same room as other people who are just as bored as you are, because no two want to watch the same show?

So, I don't get why more people don't resolve "more enjoyable 2011 than 2010", and then work out how to achieve that.

With that in mind, my usual New Year's wish: "May the best of your past be surpassed by the worst of your future."

  • Thanks for commenting, at least someone read it!

  • Things usually get quiet in these forums at this time of year.

I have a very wise friend who sends himself emails -- taking advantage of the Delay Delivery option in the email system so that in six months or a year, he receives "thinking of you" messages from his past self. Often he'll mention projects he intended to complete and ask himself how those are going. He also writes about his current troubles, and it gives him a chance to look back on what seems very minor when he receives them, and laugh at what he considered critical months ago. It gives him a chance to think back on what has happened, and when he replies to his future self, it gives a chance to put frame things in life on a much longer perspective.

Anyway, your editorial made me think of him, and I figured I'd share. 🙂

  • Thanks Andy and Gus. I like the idea of resolving to enjoy something more. That is a better way of setting goals. Next step is to list the things that can help achieve the goal of enjoying x,y, or z better.

  • Richard, that was well worth sharing. I'll be thinking on that idea some more!
