Requirements for Reporting Services? (2005)

  • Hello group,

I'm interested in getting reporting services up for my users here but have a few questions.

I'm trying not to overload any of my servers but would really like to get reporting services installed and running somehow.

    here is my setup.

w2k3 server with IIS7 doing all the webhosting

w2k3 server with SQL2005 doing the live database hosting

w2k3 server with SQL2005 with plans to be used to mirror DBs

we don't have an SQL license for the mirror server (not sure if this matters or not)

    here are my concerns/desires

I would LIKE to put reporting services on the mirror server but i'm not sure if you need a license to do so.

I don't want to install any SQL components on the IIS server

I don't really want to install any IIS components on the Live SQL05 server.

what are my options? (if any)

I will consider making a compromise if i need to.

    TIA!

    Will

  • well.. i've been searching some more since my post and have found some info about the licensing question..(narrows my options considerably)

From the SQL Server 2005 Pricing and Licensing White paper...

    http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlserverlicensing.mspx

BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE / COMPONENTS IN ADDITIONAL SERVERS

The Business Intelligence components for SQL Server 2005 include Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services. To use any of these components, the server on which Business Intelligence is installed must have a valid SQL Server 2005 license. If these components are in a separate server than the main database server, then they require an additional license of each additional server where they are installed.

  • Reporting Services is just like a lot of other .Net web apps so I would recommend you setup the web part on your IIS server and the database on the SQL 2005 server (not the mirrored one). This should also clear you from any licensing issues w/ big brother...

  • Thanks for the reply Ben,

Does this mean that I can set up the web portion without worrying about the licensing? I was under the impression that that was part of reporting services as well and would require licensing..

I'll have to check it out. I think that could be an option for us if we can pull it off.

    Thanks again

    Will
