we use crystal reports to publish reports on the web from our SQL MIS Databases. Crystal licensing is quite expensive with the new agreement in ver 8.5 onwards, As well as the quality of graphs (in ver 8.5) is not very good.
My question is what reporting tools do you use to report against your sql servers and how do you rate them in terms of speed of access, ease of creation and deployment,Cost and quality of content.
any feedback will be most appreciated.

I found a one page description of what the rporting services is about. Phoned microsoft and asked them about it they said they counld not give any info as it is in beta test phase. it is been released as beta 1 for msdn on 28th june then full prduct is due next year. thay could not tell me how it will be packaged and sold either. So any ifomation you can get on it would be great as i cannot even find any seminars where it will be discussed in the uk.

Yes, i have registered for the beta. It is top secret as this is MS entry into BI for the masses. Cognos, Business Objects , Crystal reports will be in trouble and MS wants to catch most vendors off-guard

Let us jnow how you get on. We donot have msdn (eventually convinced my boss to subscribe) so cannot test. I read that Reporting services was only due to be released in the next version of SQL but they delayed the release on the next version of SQL,so it does not appear to be an unstable database,But decided to release reporting services now,Hence not much info is available on the product.

I think most important names have been dropped in the thread. Cognos and BusinessObjects are big players in BI (and reporting).
Both suites offer a host of functionality, besides pure reporting, and are by no means 'cheap'.
I thought that Crystal was incorporated in the Visual Studio .NET. And I also assume you can distribute your reports built with .NET using the Web without additional licensing. So you could get away with the cost of your Visual Studio license (under $2500).
Has probably less features than the stand-alone version of Crystal...
(From the Crystal web site : )
quote:
A Crystal Reports .NET reporting component is fully integrated. It is designed for developing and testing server or web applications. Although you may deploy your applications using this bundled component, it is best suited for internal pilot within a workgroup. User requests beyond a capacity threshold will fail.
A bunch of other restrictions apply too. However the full license of Crystal is not nearly as costly as a Cognos or BO implementation in a webbased application.

Public beta is expected by fall, release by end of year. There are many articles/code samples to do simple reporting on the web. Maybe u can use this till the Reporting Services public beta is released.
check this link for BI reporting..
