My first installation of SQL 2005 requires the use of Reporting Services. Is Reporting Services always installed on the same server as SQL Server 2005 or do I have the option of having it run outside of the database server? If I have this option, is this something that Microsoft recommends? I'm concerned with having IIS and SQL Server on the same server, however if that's the new 2005 best practice then there's not much I can do about it.
Thanks, Dave

No, they can be installed on different servers. At my previous workplace we had the Reporting Services install on our intranet server.

We have the option of purchasing a database server and an IIS server. Do you know if it is common practice to install Reporting Services on a separate IIS server? Is so I will take that approach and purchase an IIS server.

Does installing them on seperate servers require extra licensing?
I will research it myself, but if anyone already knows...

My understanding is that you must have a license for SQL on the server that has reporting services. So SQL on one server plus RS on another = 2 license. I believe the thought behind this is that RS is part of SQL Server the product and if you wish to install on another server then it would be the same as installing SQL Server on that server as well. Sort of their way of saying it is free but if your environment is such that you need to have it on another server then you can probably afford the extra license.
