Reporting Services Licensing

  • Hi All,

I want to use data-driven subscriptions and security extensions. Its not hard to determine that I need Enterprise edition to accomplish this. However, I have 2 boxes - 1 running the web/windows service and the second hosting the ReportServer database. Do I need Enterprise edition on both boxes? Or can 1 of them be Standard Edition?

Any one who can determine this from the Microsoft site is a better person than me.

    Thanks

    Darren

  • I don't think you need either version for the web reporting function (the Report Server).  You just need the enterprise version on the database server itself.  That is my interpretation.

  • Thanks for you reply.

The Report Server (my web server) must have a SQL Server Enterprise edition License. The only thing I cannot get absolute confirmation on is whether the database has to be Enterprise edition as well. Even our PSfD contact at Microsoft is only able to say "It is my understanding that the database can be either version".

Does anyone know the definitive answer? We can't be the first to have wanted some of these advanced features, yet also wanted to keep costs as low a possible, can we?

  • OK - answered my own question. This is direct from Microsoft.

If you have 2 boxes - 1 hosts Reporting Services (e.g. report manager / web service / windows service) and the other hosts just the ReportServer catalog, then having Enterprise edition on the first box fully licenses all Enterprise features of Reporting Services. The only reason to have Enterprise edition on the DB box is if you are using Enterprise features of SQL Server itself.
