Reporting services License !!!!

  • Hi,

We have 2 servers. Server A & Server B. In Server A we have installed only database engine.

In Server B, we have installed only Reporting Services and created the ReportServer, & ReportServerTempdb are on Server A.

Both Server A & Server B are SQL Server 2005 EE x64. And we have purchased Per processor license.

Now my question is Do we need to Pay the license for Server A & Server B OR just the Server A? As I'm assuming Reporting services is a FREE feature.

where can I get these details about what features are free & what will be charged?

  • Your best bet is to contact Microsoft. My understanding of the license agreement is that you need to install all the components on the same server that you license the database engine. If you install SSIS, SSAS, and/or SSRS on a different server, then you need to purchase additional licenses for that server as well.

  • Lynn is on the money - you need them both licensed. The 2005 licensing info can be found here (note, specifcally jumped to SSRS license question, and 2008 overview doc here.

  • Thank You very much,

This information helped me a lot. I went through this link http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/reporting-services-features.aspx, and I found that Reporting Services Standard edition covers almost all feature that we have in Enterprise edition.

So now I'm planning to Uninstall Enterprise edition of Reporting Services from Server B and install Standard edition. which saves lot of many. But I have couple of question:

Is there any issues, If Reporting Server is Standard edition and its ReportServer and ReportServerTempDb are on Enterprise edition?

    Is this allowed?

  • I wouldn't have thought that there would be an issue housing the DB on the EE but referencing from a SE report server (after all, it's just the database) but you may want to check with Microsoft (or see if msdn has info on installation configurations) to confirm.

  • I think the only thing that would happen is you don't get the EE features like Data Driven Subscriptions. But I think it is legal..
