I installed Reporting Services on a Windows 2000 test machine several months ago with no problems, and now I'm trying to install it on a production box and am having issues. There are 2 differences between the machines. On the test box I installed the full version of Visual Studio and on the production box I installed only the necessary components. The SQL Server install on the test box is located on the C drive and the production box is on F.
Here's what happens: I get to the end of the installation and it says that the ReportingServer database was not created then I get a failue error 1603. Of course there is no initialization of the web service because there is no database to connect to. In the Application log there is a login failure Error 18456 on both the 'sa' account and an NT account with sysadmin rights. In the setup log file there is Error 5105 "Device activation error. Physical filename may be incorrect."
I have tried the installation many times and checked all of the troubleshooting articles that I could find, but still get the same. I even created the default Data path on C just for fun and it didn't help. Has anyone seen this before?

Check the path for the default Data and Log files in your production server. I'm not sure where RS tries to create its databases, but I assume they should be on the server's default.
It may be that the default paths on the Prod server point to an invalid folder.

Thanks, but I stated earlier that the production box is installed on F, and I cannot change that. I can't find any documentation that it has to be on C but I'm still looking 🙂

I found Article 836873 that fixed the issue--not necessarily related to Reporting Services--of getting an error creating a database. It says that the problem occurs because the DefaultData and DefaultLog registry values exist, but the folder paths in the registry values are either blank or don't exist. All I had to do is set the default paths in Enterprise Manager and Reporting Services installed properly. Thanks for the input 🙂
