Reporting Services Installation Error

  • I am installing Reporting Services 2000 Developer Edition on my local machine to teach myself how to use it. After installation, I get the following error message...does anyone know what it means and how to fix it?

    Thanks,

  • Michael.  The reporting server service needs to be initialized.  This can be caused by quite a few different issues.  The first thing to do is follow the suggested steps in the BOL as the error message suggests.  If that doesn't help the discussion group for reporting services on microsoft.com is very useful.

This is where I found some excellent resources and other people with exactly identical problems.  That's going to be the trick to your issue.

  • ugh, I just installed Reporting Services in my test environment.  I'm sure it's an alright product, but the install really sucked.  Everything I had to do by hand should be handled by the installer, right?  That's what I get for using version 1 of a product.

  • Agreed on all counts.

The installation was a nightmare on my end as well, but the product features and the power of the reporting language has been well worth the effort and headaches.  For a version 1 product it is exciting to think of it's future.

  • it does kinda suck when it takes you two afternoons to install the product and get it running.  I had to use google and books online to really get the thing working.  The first afternoon was a wash because I had a previous installation on my test database server and I wasn't able to fix a problem.  The second afternoon was equally annoying just trying to get IIS / ASP.NET/ Reporting Services / SQL Server to all talk to together.

I'm not a unix geek anymore... windows installs are supposed to be one-click GUI operations, right?
