I have 2 Windows 2003 DataCenter edition servers and I currently have 2005 SSRS running on both , scaled out. However we have a need to put a new application which requires SSRS 2008 , now I'm skeptical and haven't really found any documentation stating you can, I know you can have an 08 install with the ReportServer and ReportServerTempdb residing on an 05 instance but not with both 05 and 08 RS on the same host.
any insight would be very helpful

I would be very surprised if you can't run both RS2005 and RS2008 on the same server. At the end of the day, reporting services is simply a pair of web sites.

Certainly, Rs2000 and RS2005 peacefully co-exist on the same server.
