If there are two databases on the same server, where one of the databases contains a table that for all practical purposes should be read-only where its companion table in the other database is the table-of-record, is it better to use replication or just use triggers to copy and update the information. The master table isn't updated that often but changes do need to be reflected as soon as possible.

I would use Replication. This is exactly the kind pof thing that it was intended for. I really don't see that roll-your-own triggers would add anything.
