Replication between sql 2000 and sql 2008 R2

  • Hi all,

We are trying to upgrade our transactional replication and the servers to SQL 2008 R2 and we are planning to do this in phases.

One of our publishing servers is still under sql 2000 sp4 (we will upgrade this server soon)

We also have separate distributor server which is currently on sql 2005 sp3 and replication works just fine with sql 2000 sp4.

    My question is:

Will replication work between sql 2000 sp4 (publisher) and sql 2008 R2 (distributor)?

The problem we have is that it is the last production box on sql 2000 and we don't have any other sql 2000 servers to test.

    Thanks

  • SQL Server 2008 cannot act as a Distubutor for SQL Server 2000 Publisher. See the version comparison here

YES, It will work. SQL Server 2008 can act as Distributor for SQL Server 2000 publisher. You can even have SQL Server 2000 as subscriber. As you mentioned that you are already running your distributor on SQL Server 2005 so you will not notice any functionality/feature difference after you upgrade that to SQL Server 2008. For example Tracer Token does not work when publisher running on SQL Server 2000 but that is true even in your current setup when running 2005 for distributor.
