I have a situation where I have 2 servers. One behind a firewall and one not.
Both servers are accessed via web pages (IIS).
I want to replicate using push transactional replication from my staging server, through the firewall to the public server.
The technical issues don't worry me but the licensing of SQL server does.
Frankly I am confused by the whole Microsoft Licensing scheme. If you call Microsoft they contradict their own web site.
Looking at the Microsoft site the "per processor" license seems to be the one I need, but SQL Server 2000 insists that "Per Seat" licensing is used for the distributor. This ramps up the costs to an alarming degree as Microsoft say that every device that connects, even via indirect means, requires a Client Access License.
It looks as if the simplest financial solution is to buy a box and license to act solely as a distributor.
What does everyone else do with regard to licensing?
Does the licensing model work differently with SQL 7 to SQL 2000?

I'll admit to being constantly puzzled by their licensing also. I leave it to our admin to figure out so far! I'll see if I have anything about it at the office.
