Replication

  • I am a novice with sql so please bear with me!  I have 2 offices that I serve one central and one remote.  I'm charged with finding the best solution for our DB.  I have 6 field inspectors that need the db on each of their laptops and when they come into the remote office they connect to the T1 that I have.  I propose to create 6 folders for them to place their individual db's in.  Then sync those 6 dbs to the central office db.  How should I go about doing this and is their a better solution that I'm not aware of ?  Help me please. Thanks!!!

  • Is there a db server in each office? When you say you have 6 inspectors, do they all need a complete copy of the db or just a slice that pertains to them?

When they synch, are you merging information from the 6 dbs?

There are probably a few choices, but some more information will help us suggest something that works well.

  • No, there isn't a db server @ the remote office, only @ the central office which they connect to via the T1 line.  Yes, they all need a full copy of the db on each laptop.

Yes, I'd like to merge data (send & receive data) from all 6 dbs.  Ultimately, I'd like to get the info from each of the 6 inspectors and sync them to the main db and send any new data that was created in the main db back to each inspectors db.  Hope this helps.  Thanks!

  • You need to implement Merge Replication. Have a look in BOL and make sure you test frist in a test environment as Merge Replication is not for the faint hearted!

    Kindest Regards,

  • Thanks for your help!  Please excuse my ignorance but BOL????  I not familiar with that acronym.

  • BOL = Microsoft Books Online...essentially what you get when you hit the F1 key when in Query Analyser or Enterprise Manager. A most excellent and highly used piece of documentation, it has pretty much everything and should always be the first source that you go to for information about SQL Server. I would make sure that you have the most currect version that can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/productdoc/2000/books.asp
