replacing a strange character

    6-18 months back.  Someone posted almost the same exact question.  I posted the same solution but using a update / cross join statement instead.  And I clearly remember the loop solution you posted .

     

    And it was really a compliment... but maybe it sounded too much like an insult !

    I did initially try this as a loop - old habits are hard to break...  The function was not in the posting and I felt reasonably good about that sucker...
