Renaming SQL server.

  • Hi i renamed the server and say testold to testold2.I donot have any problem in connecting to the new server. But the funny part is i can register both old and new server name without any problem.

As per my understanding once i rename the server if i ping the server with old name it shouldn't find it.But i can ping the server by both old name and new name.

    Is this a problem??

Did any one come across this before??

    Thanks

  • Kind of thought PING had to do with name resolution, outside of SQLSERVER, like by a DNS server, or WINS server. Therefore I would guess you DNS server still has an entry for the old name, and on for the new name. Although there is a lot I don't really know about name resolution, so could be wrong here. Also doesn't the client network util also let you define aliases. Possibly you have an alias still defined for the old server.
