remote installation issue

  • Hi,

I'm trying to install SQL 2005 on a server which I'm RDC'd in. The Windows OS is server 2008. When I start installation I receive an error

'The Windows Installer does not permit installation from a remote desktop connection'

And the install fails. Is this a Windows policy issue or a SQL server 2005 issue? Has anyone encountered this before?

    Thanks

Edit: The disc is located in my desktop drive and I have access to all my drives from the server

  • I would contend it is neither a policy OR a SQL issue. I think it is tied entirely to the installer not wanting to deal with the connection to your machine the way it is.

I would suggest copying the full contents of the DVD to a file share, on the machine your are RDP'd into map a drive to that share and install from there. The upside is that you now have a central install point for SQL, which I view as a good practice anyway.

  • it looks like its a windows installer 2.0 issue. Implemented on windows server 2003
