Relationship between Sharepoint indexing and sql server

    If possible, please let me know the relationship between Sharepoint 2003 indexing

    process and SQL Server.(2000 also). This is in relation to the issues I am facing on a server where large Bulk inserts are being done against a db and is running for several days.
