Relational data via UDM?

  • Much of what I am reading about the new BI functionality in

Analysis Services 2005 speaks as how the UDM "blurs the

line" between Relational and Multidimensional data. One

example is how it is now easier to create a invoice or bill

of materials report in AS2005, something that has always

been simple in a relational model, but difficult in

    Analysis Services 2000.

What I have not found yet is documentation or examples on

how this is actually implemented. Creating multidimensional

datasources from relational databases is straightforward in

AS 2005, but I am interested in material on how to expose

relational data through Analysis Services 2005, so that end

users can write queries and reports that utilize either the

cubed data or the base relational tables, without having to

    switch between separate data sources.

  • I'm (still) waiting for new material regarding UDM from Microsoft ...

Apart from Paul Sanders' old articles there is nothing on this topic. My understanding is that UDM is constructed on top of a modified version of your OLTP (production) database. using Views.

But an end-to-end cube implementation from Microsoft would be able to eliminate confusion.

    Cheers,
