I don't think permissions in the SQL Servers is relevant because I am only admin to the SQL Server developer edition on my desk top but the other server which is our development server I use a shared DBO account and I can register that. But most important I can also see other 20 to 30 SQL Servers on the network I cannot connect to. I am admin only in my Win XP box all others I don't have permissions to connect. So it may be related to the browser service which most admins turn off.
What I have noticed is that even though the browser service is turned off we can still see the green on the registered servers but only if the version is (9.0.3034) not (8.0.2040)
