Hi,
We have database of size 80 Gb,we take full backup of the database daily, its finishing within 3:30 Hrs daily. But particulary on sunday it's taking nearly 5:30 hrs.could anyone say what might be the reason.
I have also checked at that time no users are connected to the database.

There might be a database maintenance job such as index rebuild.

I would be somewhat worried by a backup time that long for the databs size you are working with. Obviously this depends largely on the disc systems you are working with, but I suspect you may be backing up to the same disc the data or logs are on. Worth checking.

Or are you backing up across the network ? If so, times can be affected by other network activity.

Possibly because of weekend maintenance jobs, the log grows and it takes long time to backup this large log file along with the full backup.

A full backup doesn't back up the log. There might be log entries of the database is under heavy use as the backup is running as there could be the need to grab those transactions, but anything in the log before the backup begins isn't included.

If read your post correctluy you are confirming that you ar ebacking up to the SAME drive daily. If you mean the same drive as the dat athen this is not a good idea - what happens when you get a hard drive failure? As a minimum I would back up to diffrent discs in the same machinem, then copy the backup files to tape or another machine over the network. You will find backup speeds much improved by backing up to different disc(s).
