Recovering after Log drive fails

  • Hi there, if the drive that is holding my logs fails, how can I recover the database without loosing any transactions? Is such a thing possible?

  • The uncommitted transactions will be lost. In order to minimize the lose, backup the transaction more frequent you can.

  • Can you please tell me how this works in detail? I am thinking that if you have a full database backup and some log backups and your log drives goes down with every log entry after your last log backup, then it is not possible to recover the database to the last commited transaction and that you have to recover by recovering the full database backup and then the log backups. Is there another way? Is it possible to get the transactions back up to the last commited transaction?

  • You may try to perform log backup immediately after noticing something wrong with your database. If the log file is totally inaccessable, you will lose all transactions since last log backup.
