Recommended books for SQL Server Reporting Services?

  • Am curious as to what some of your recommendations would be for books dealing primarily with SQL Server Reporting Services.

    Thanks in advance

  • AFAIK here's what's available so far. The URL's below list the ISBN number and cover photo. It's best to browse them first at a bookstore, they're all a little different styles. . .

The Rational Guide to: SQL Server Reporting Services (2004)

    http://www.wvmitchell.com/library/details/1375.html

Just a basic intro but only $10

Professional SQL Server Reporting Services (2004)

    http://www.wvmitchell.com/library/details/1418.html

Lots of hands-on. Personally don't care for Wrox books. $40

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services (2004)

    http://www.wvmitchell.com/library/details/1436.html

    Lots of hands-on. $50

Hitchhiker’s Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services

    http://www.sqlreportingservices.net/

Just out, haven't read yet. Lots of details, should be very useful.

  • I can highly recommend Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 200 Reporting Services.  Well written (with humor) and an in-depth exploration of the product, including its strenghts and weaknesses.

    Bill

  • I agree, the Hitchhiker's Guide already helped me solve one major problem.

One more new book just out from MS Press:

Microsoft SQL Server(TM) 2000 Reporting Services Step by Step

    ISBN 0-7356-2106-3

  • Actually, I didn't like Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Step by Step - it's too basic for my needs - so I exchanged it at B&N for the Hitchhiker one.

I would recommend Hitchhiker's as well.

  • google.com

  • How in the Sam's Hill would the google.com's search website help me if I specifically wanted to hear suggestion by other fellow SQLServerCentral.com's forum posters?

  • Microsoft Reporting Services in Action by Teo Lachev (ISBN 1-932394-22-2) has very useful content if you are interested in integrating SQL RS reporting into applications.

The WinForms Adventure Works Report Wizard that is part of chapter 10 is a rather well designed application that is detailed in the book. This application is used to retrieve a list of reports from the RS catalog, determine report execution options for live or snapshot reports, work with custom properties, request snapshot reports, work with snapshot history, obtain report parameters, use multi-valued parameters, retrieve supported export formats from the RS server and permits requesting reports by URL and Web Service.

Best of luck on your book search.
