At one point it was discussed to allow anonymous people to read articles. What happened with that idea? There are plenty of times I would like to share an article from here but the person wanting to read the article doesn't have an account so they give up instead. It would probably increase the user base if the articles could be read without requiring a login.

+1. I've been encouraging the folks here to read articles / sign up and I've noticed. The simple fact is exactly how Sean says it is - if they have to sign up then you run the risk that they will go elsewhere for their information. Or worse - not bother at all.

Yes and no. We've almost always required a login, which helps us support the site, and I've been hearing this complaint for 15 years.
We are looking at some work to remove or reduce the efforts required to read articles, starting next week.

Thanks Steve. I know it has been brought up before. I hadn't heard anything about it in a long time and had assumed it was no longer an issue until earlier this week when it happened again that I pointed somebody to an article here and they couldn't view it without an account. Things like the DelimitedSplit8K being behind a login is criminal when you see things like nested loops to accomplish the same thing and you want to point somebody to a much better approach.
Hopefully your team will be able to figure out a solution.

I realize this is an old conversation but still valid, my thought is that in today's media marketing, freebies are considered a must, no carrot no catch in a way. It would be simple to create a pool of high technical value articles like the DelimitedSplit8k etc., if one want's more then register.

This has been changed. No longer is a login needed to read articles.
Only to post.

Awesome stuff. I am glad I can send links to people now that won't complain about being required to signup first. Of course I still always suggest that they should!!!
