Re-boot server vs Re-start SQL services

  • I have a new server running Win 2008 64bit and SQL 2005 64bit SP3. Is there a difference between a server re-boot and stopping and starting SQL services? I just resolved a database email issue that I first re-booted with no change to the issue. I then stopped and restarted the SQL services only and like magic my Database email issue was resolved.

I’m trying to understand why a server re-boot (first) did not yield the same results as stopping and starting (performed after the re-boot) did.

    Any ideas?

  • Rebooting a Server will free up the resource utilization on the box whereas restarting the instance will do the same for the SQL Server instance.

Not sure though, how it helped you resolve the dbmail issue. The error logs will have more details on why the dbmail was failing.

  • I did check the log's and nothing stuck out as odd. I'll look again at the logs and see if anything stands out and report back. Thanks

  • ive had database mail randomly change itself after a server reboot. normally using profiles where it will work for a period of time, then will start sending mails from a the default profile address and then after a reboot it will start using the correct profile again!

its very odd to say the least is db mail
