Questioning about versions / licensing...

  • I have been developing an application on a SQL 2005 Express database for the past year or so and I am finally getting to the point of moving it into production.

Up until now my company did not purchase a SQL Server because we wanted to make sure that the project would be completed.

My question is - we are looking to purchase SQL Server 2008 - but which version should we look for? Web? Standard?

Primarily - the database(s) that are put onto this server will be used in an internal web application - with no more than 15 users.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    sb

  • Standard.

Unless you need additional features and functions, then I would go Enterprise. However, Enterprise edition is very expensive.

  • I second Jason's view, Standard edition should be suffice, unless you need DB Mirroring, Data compression, Database Partitioning and many other enterprise level features..

  • I agree - I just was not sure about the Web edition.

If we were to get a standard SQL 2k8...

How many licenses would we need.

At the moment - the applications that will go against the DB will be small - so we will probably install on a vmware machine (unless otherwise advised)...

what do we need to do for licenses?...

  • I license per processor used by SQL Server (on the server).
