Hi Guys,
I have been good about maintaining by DB's and have been regularly defraging,Reindexing, shrinking etc. But now, I have come to a point, where I need to increase the size of the MDF file for one of my larger DB's.
Based on my calculations, I need to increase the DB by around 4GB, the DB size is currently at 38GB. I am planning on doing it tonight at a time when activity is lowest. I was wondering if someone has any ideas as to how long the process of expanding by 4GB would take( approx), as its been a real long time since I last did this.
Thanks
Vik.

This depends largley on your I/O system and how it's configured, but even a horribly slow disk system should be able to accomplish this in just a few minutes.

BTW, I can certainly understand needing to shrink a production database once in a while, but I don't generally include that as part of normal maintenance. If you are in a constant cycle of shrinking your database, you are causing unnecessary overhead, and not really saving any disk space to boot.

Thanks DC,
You are correct, I normally shrink it manually once or so a year. I understand the overhead caused by constantly shrinking it.
