Is it possible to install the SQL Sever management studio as a management tool to manage a SQL 2000 instance without updating the database engine to SQL 05 or install a new named instance in a local server? Does anyone how to do this?
Thanks!

Yes.
Install 2005 and when you get to the screen to select what you want installed, just install the workstation components. Unselect the database engine and all the other stuff.

No problem. I'm currently managing 12 SQL 2000 instances using Managemnt Studio on my laptop. If you have SQL tools installed on your PC, simply uninstall and install the SQL 2005 tools. Takes a little getting used to the new layout, but after awhile you'll be hooked.
