I'm looking into a problem query and used sys.dm_exec_query_plan to get the existing query plan. However I'm seeing several entries where the cost is 100% and one exciting spot where the cost is 304%. I've attached the query plan (names changed to protect the innocent). Can anyone tell me why I'd be seeing such strange results?

SSMS mistakes. It's not even uncommon. Try Plan Explorer rather.
