Query Analyzer blues

  • I just touched SS 2005 today.  Used SS 2000 for four years prior to this.  In 2000 I really liked Query Analyzer because it was a separate window that I could maximize.

It appears to me that the window for typing in queries is opened via the "New Query" button on the menu.  It opens up to the right of the database/table listing.  Is there any way I can open this as a separate window that I can maximize as in 2000?  I suppose I could "cheat" by closing the Object Explorer and opening another instance of the Object Explorer.  Maybe.  Not trying it yet.

    Thanks.

  • No separate windows in SSMS. It's a pane (and pain) in SSMS only for queries.

You can still connect with QA, but the object browser only partially works.

  • The other thing you will notice with SSMS is that it is S.....L....O.....W.

It speeds up a bit with SP2a on it but SQL Query Analyser is still much faster.

  • I agree. I don't like the 2005 query tool as much as Q. Analyzer at all. For that matter I don't like Mgt. studio as much as Ent. Manager for ease of use and its functionality either. A few things are better, but, in general I think they took one step forward and two steps backwards.

  • There are somethings I really like about management studio

    • The ability to change the connection for the query window
    • The way it exposes additional properties on remote servers that simply aren't available in EM
    • Integration with source control
    • The filter facility
    • The replication monitor facility
    • The ability to arrange scripts into solutions

I know it is easy to criticise but the negative points really look as if the people who specced it up didn't bother to consider the good points about EM.

SP2a does speed Management Studio up and does change some of the functionality.

The thing that really annoys me is the lack of intellisense. Well at least Red-Gate are getting and order for 10 copies of their tool bundle out of my company as a result!

  • I like the reports, the fact that there is an auto refresh for alot of screens and a button to manually refresh. scripting to a file or a query window.

Things I do not like. It is very slow to respond. The layout is not as easy to use. the db mdf and ldf bar graph of space allocated and used, the ability to grant select to a long list of tbls to one user, Query Analyzer screen layout, Query analyzer as an install tool seperate from Mgt Studio. Some of the reports do not work correctly. Maint plans are a little more difficult to setup. When I create a wizard plan that has say 5 items to do why do I have to select the databases for each task for every single step. Why not pick the db's up front the first time and all of the tasks apply to them.
