Query Analyzer 2005 replacement

  • All

I have several customers who currently only have SQL Server 2000 Query Analyzer installed and access our adhoc server thru a VPN.  They are distributed across the US and not employees of the company.

I want to upgrade to SQL Server 2005, but know that I will break my clients remote access to our adhoc server.

    My Question is:

    1. Is there a Microsoft tool that can be downloaded that replaces QA?
    2. If we have to have them install SQL Server Management Studio, is there a free download?  Can they install the SSMS express edition ( which is free ) and access SQL Server Enterpirse?

Let me know if you can answer these questions or have implemented a solution to a similar problem.

    Thanks in Advance

  • We had the clients install the FREE 2005 express edition and they now have access to the databases.

  • Hi, I am in a similar situation at the moment regarding the upgrade I am carrying out in my organisation to SQL Server 2005.  Developers have access to Enterprise Manager and analysts have  Query Analyser.

As far as I am aware the only options are Management Studio for everyone or SQLCMD.  SQLCMD can be exported to a file but my users would have a heart attack if QA is taken away due to the upgrade to 2005 and not replaced with a nice GUI.

Not sure what we could get out of Visual Studio 2005.  Hope this helps

  • Maybe I don't understand your question, but your users can continue to use Query Analyzer to connect to SQL 2005 databases.  You can also connect to them with other query tools like EISQLw which is freeware.  If a query tool is all the users need, I wouldn't distribute Management Studio or the Express version.
