Is the SQL Server service running? You can check Windows Services applet.

Hi I am still stuck with this one any body out there might be able to help.
the other nasty thing that is happening with my SQL server is that when I connect to the sql querry analyser the object browser connection fails with the following error "Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver TCP/IP Sockets SQL server does not exist or access denied
Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver TCP/IP Sockets ConnectionOpen Connect
The Connection to the server has been broken
"

Is this database on the local machine or a remote machine?
What permissions/roles does the account that you are trying to connect have in SQL? If builtin\Administrators has not been taken out of the sysadmin role then you should be able to connect with an account that is in the local administrators group.

Can you list exactly what is in the connection dialog?

The database is running on my local machine.
In run whne i write Isqlw the querry analyser opens and the normal dialog box with a drop down menu to select the server and the radio button options either to select Windows or SQL Server Authentication opens.
Here if I select the Windows authentication the querry analyser opens but without the object browser it throws the error
"Microsoft ODBC Sql server driver TCO/IP Sockets Sql server does not exist or access denied
Microsoft ODBC SQL Serevr Driver Tcp/IP Sockets Connection Open
The connection to the server has been broken "

Are you able to connect to that server in any other way with the same credentials?

yes Jason
As far as i know isqlw windows or the querry analyser makes 2 connections.
1 for the queery part and the other for teh object browser.
so as I am trying to connect the object browser does not open and fails so on my left hand side I cannot see the objects in my databse server all I can see is the querry window behaving perfectly normal

Did your system ever have a different hostname? I wonder if that could cause the issue? What protocols are enabled for connection to the instance?

well as far as i know the no host name was changed
secondly the network guys moved my system to a more secured group in the AD but that should not have affected connecting to my local database.
Protocols i am using TCP/IP and named pipes

Curious, is it just Query Analyzer that you are having problems connecting with? Can you connect to fine using the hostname with Enterprise Manager or osql?

Do you have an alias setup for this connection?
It may be worthwhile to check your client utility and verify the alias status (present or not). If there is one, try to reconfigure it. If it is not present, try creating one with the appropriate connection parameters.
