We are replacing our tape backups with something "better", my backup expert tells me that Quantum is the best, especially the deduping functionality. Is anyone using this? My fear is recovery time is going to be way longer than normal. However tapes stink. Thoughts?

Quantum is certainly highly ranked as far as Backups to tape go.
Backing up SQL Server direct to tape will generally take a while. As far as speed and deduping, there are several more viable options for SQL Server. EMC has a solution of backing up to a grid using their RAIN technology which dedupes as well.
But with SQL Server, I still prefer to backup to file utilizing something like SQL Backup, or using RedGate Backup or LiteSpeed. Then do your backup to tape or to a grid. This provides a two-tier solution and can help in recovery.

I should have been more clear, we use sql and litespeed to back up and then back up the backups to tape. So this would just be the secondary storage.

So you're not changing the basic SQL Server backup process? No worries then. Dedupe is pretty cool technology. More and more use is being made of it.

My experience with Quantum has been pleasant. It presents as a tape library, but it's way faster.
