  ...just not the done thing ? or the ideal place for a generic procedure that is relatively database independant? 

  Has anybody ever done this ?  I have a fairly generic stored procedure that is relatively database independant.  I'm loathed to put it onto any particular use database, is there a particular place that any of you place such SPs

  You could but it makes it unportable and risky.

  Is is better to Create an special DB just for those on your servers so that you are granted to have that as an standard.
