Processor Upgrade for sql server 2000

  • Hi. We will be upgrading the box that sql server 2000 runs on from a dual processor to a quad processor. Besides the licensing issue, is there anything I would have to change or set in sql server for this change to occur other than the person physically doing the processor upgrade? I checked the properties tab on the server in enterprise manager and saw the processor tab and noticed right now we show 2 processors. I assume when the upgrade is complete this will show the 4 processors??? Or am I supposed to manually make a change somewhere in EM.

    Thanks

    Juanita

  • As long as you have not set any affinity, you should get the use of all 4 CPUs. If you set an affinity, you'd still see all 4 CPUs, but the server would only use 1 or 2, depending on config.

  • I don't believe you will have any issues either, just make sure you make a backup before the upgrade for safety as always. I assume you are using Win 2K or later as well which is better at upgrades than NT4 was. In 4 if you upgraded from a single processor to multiple you had to adjust the NT instal from single processor kernel to multiple processor kernel is the only thing I remember ever was a stumbling block. You already are in multiprocessor kernel even if NT4 so the additional should be icing.

Now as for only use 1 or 2 CPU I have not heard this nor do I have a machine to benchmark but OS should start some threads on the other two processors to for even SQL which even if not SQL threads should be of help to SQL since more CPU time is open now. Why do you make that statement Steve just in case by some act of God sending down a commantment to give me a better budget I ever see one of these?
