processing delay

  • I have two unlinked SQL 2000 databases running on separate MSWindows 2003 servers (Enterprise Edition) running two unconnected and unrelated databases. The servers are running on a WAN in the same domain with applications accessing them from remote sites in that same domain across the WAN. The applications accessing each of the servers (unlinked and not related in any way in their function) are periodically and at the same general time of day experiencing large delays processing requests. One of the applications presents the error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Network monitors indicate no heavy usage during these periods of slowness. The server logs show no problems. I would like to monitor to enable me to pinpoint the source of this problem. What parameters should I monitor, and what tools should I use to monitor the effected servers?

    Thanks!

  • them from remote sites across the LAN

Across the LAN or across the WAN? Are these the same domains?

are periodically and at the same general time of day

What is happening on your servers at this same time?

    - Antivirus update

    - Periodic Windows update

    - Local backup

    - Any additional maintenance? Firewall reporting or log maintenance? (if across the WAN)

  • Running across a WAN in the same domain. Windows, Antivirus and other updates are not occuring at or near this time according to our WAN administrator
